People searching "where was The Odyssey filmed" usually want a checklist, not a seminar. Christopher Nolan shot The Odyssey (2026) on location across Morocco, Greece, Italy, Scotland, Iceland, and related Sahara work near Dakhla, with limited studio days in Los Angeles. Below is the practical map, then a short note on which places are movie sets and which are Homeric archaeology you can still visit.

For the deeper poem-versus-dig guide, read The Odyssey on Screen: Real Places Behind Homer's Journey.

Morocco: Troy on the caravan road

The film's walled Troy was built and shot at Aït Ben Haddou, the UNESCO ksar near Ouarzazate. Earthen towers, defensive alleys, and desert light have stood in for antiquity since Lawrence of Arabia. Marrakech and Essaouira also hosted production days. Later Sahara work near Dakhla (White Dune) added empty dune frames that Homeric Troy never had.

If you want the excavated city named in Hittite texts as Wilusa, go to Troy at Hisarlık in Türkiye. Same epic. Different continent.

Greece: Messenia, Voidokilia, Methoni, Acrocorinth

Greek shooting concentrated in Messinia and the wider Peloponnese in spring 2025. Reports place Cyclops-adjacent work at Voidokilia beach and Nestor's Cave, a short walk from the excavated Palace of Nestor at Englianos. Methoni Castle supplied a fortified harbour silhouette on the Ionian coast. On the eastern Peloponnese, Acrocorinth and the area of ancient Corinth provided ridge and palace-adjacent exteriors.

These Greek stops are the closest overlap between film unit geography and Bronze Age or classical archaeology. Telemachus visits Nestor in the poem. Nolan's cameras visited Nestor's landscape in fact.

Italy: Favignana, Lipari, and the Aeolian sea

Sicilian island units did heavy lifting for naval manoeuvres, wrecks, and Ithaca-adjacent beaches. Favignana (Aegadian Islands) is the name that appears most often in location reporting. It is not a published Atlas excavation park, so we treat it as film geography. The heritage hub of the neighbouring volcanic chain is Lipari Castle, with its prehistoric acropolis, Greek Lipàra, and a bothros of Aeolus inside the citadel museum. Vulcano and other Aeolian rocks appear in production notes for volcanic texture.

Western Sicily's temple ridge at Agrigento is optional for movie tourists and excellent for anyone who wants Doric stone after a week of beaches.

Scotland: Findlater Castle as cliff Ithaca

Moray Firth coastal work in summer 2025 used Findlater Castle and nearby Culbin Forest when the film needed a northern cliff seat for Ithaca-adjacent castle and shore scenes. The ruin is medieval Aberdeenshire, scheduled by Historic Environment Scotland. It is not Homeric Ithaca. For the Ionian island debate, start at Ithaca and compare with Corfu's Palaeopolis if you follow the Phaeacian tradition.

Iceland: underworld light

Book 11 sends Odysseus to consult the dead. Nolan used Icelandic black sand and coastal rock (Hjörleifshöfði, Snæfellsnes, Markarfljót, and related harbour approaches) for underworld sequences. Those are landscapes, not Linear B tablets. Atlas does not list them as archaeological sites.

Quick answers people type into Google

Where was Nolan's Odyssey filmed? Morocco (Aït Ben Haddou, Dakhla), Greece (Messinia, Methoni, Acrocorinth), Italy (Favignana and Aeolian waters), Scotland (Findlater / Moray), Iceland (underworld units), plus U.S. studio work.

Is the movie Troy the real Troy? No. The film used Aït Ben Haddou. The excavation is Troy.

Can I visit Mycenae from the movie? Mycenae is core Homeric archaeology and worth the drive even when a given shot used another ridge. Pair it with Tiryns and the Palace of Nestor.

What about Ithaca? Film Ithaca borrowed Favignana and Scottish cliffs. Homeric Ithaca remains the Ionian problem centred on Ithaca.

How to plan a trip from the search results

  1. Morocco day: Aït Ben Haddou for the screen Troy.
  2. Greece loop: Methoni, Palace of Nestor / Voidokilia, Acrocorinth, then Mycenae if time remains.
  3. Optional islands: Lipari for Aeolia heritage, Corfu Palaeopolis for Phaeacian tradition, Ithaca for the homeland debate.
  4. Scotland add-on: Findlater if you are already in the northeast.

That route answers the filming-location query and still lands you on excavated ground. For evidence labels, dates, and compare tools across the full Homeric set, use the editorial Odyssey places guide.

A fortified earthen ksar on the old caravan route between the Sahara and Marrakesh, its stacked pisé towers climbing a hillside above the Ounila River. Palace of Nestor

Palace of Nestor

Greece

The best-preserved Mycenaean palace on the Greek mainland, built around 1300 BCE at Englianos near modern Pylos. Its archive of Linear B tablets, frescoed halls, and wine storerooms gave archaeologists a vivid picture of Bronze Age administration and made Nestor, Homer's wise elder king of the Odyssey, feel suddenly real.

Methoni

A fortified harbour town on the southwestern tip of the Peloponnese, crowned by a Venetian castle whose sea gate opens onto the Ionian.
