Anuradhapura
377 BCE – 1017 CE
The first great capital of Sri Lanka and one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities of South Asia — for over a thousand years the seat of Sinhalese kings and a centre of Theravada Buddhism, home to colossal brick stupas rivalling the pyramids in scale, vast monasteries, sophisticated irrigation reservoirs, and the sacred Bodhi tree grown from the very tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment.
