Newark Earthworks
100 BCE – 400 CE
The largest set of geometric earthen enclosures ever built anywhere on Earth — a vast complex of precisely constructed circles, an octagon, and a square, raised by the Hopewell culture in what is now Ohio around 2,000 years ago. Far more than simple mounds, the earthworks encode sophisticated geometry and astronomy: the Octagon is aligned to the 18.6-year cycle of the moon's rising and setting points with a precision that took modern researchers considerable effort to fully recognise.
