Neuschwanstein Castle crowns a rugged hill above the village of Hohenschwangau in Bavaria, southern Germany, near the Austrian border. Ludwig II of Bavaria commissioned it in 1869 as a private retreat and homage to Richard Wagner's operatic worlds.
