(Cursus Publicus)

Spanning 2,350 kilometers across 8 major stations, this overland route was sustained by strategic oasis wells, stone-paved causeways, imperial customs houses, and fortified mountain garrisons.

Strabo — Geography, Book VII.7c. 20 CE
“From Dyrrhachium the Egnatian Road runs east into Macedonia, and is marked by milestones as far as the Hebrus River, a distance of five hundred and thirty-five miles.”
Procopius — History of the Wars, Book V.14c. 550 CE
“The Appian Way is five days’ journey for an unencumbered traveler... Appius laid stones which are extremely hard and polished them smooth, fitting them together without mortar; yet after so long a time they have not separated.”
